The Society was founded in 1938 to promote interest in Maritime History and it maintains a close link with the Merseyside Maritime Museum.

Many Members pursue research for themselves, the Society or the Merseyside Maritime Museum.

All Members receive the quarterly 'Bulletin' in which many articles and papers of significance by Members and others are published. Meetings are held monthly between September and May at 12.30pm at the Merseyside Maritime Museum when talks by Members or specialist speakers are given.

Members of the Society have access to the Archives and Library at the Merseyside Maritime Museum on Mondays - a day on which the general public is not admitted.
